Luật sư Nguyễn Văn Thân tại Sydney so sánh Điều 19 của Bộ Luật Hình Sự Việt Nam với luật pháp Úc khi nhìn nhận vai trò luật sư trong những vụ án khủng bố đe dọa nghiêm trọng đến an ninh quốc gia thì như thế nào.
Quốc Hội Việt Nam hôm 20/6 đã thông qua Điều 19 Bộ Luật Hình Sự buộc luật sư tố cáo thân chủ với trên 88% Đại biểu đồng thuận.
Lý do để các đại biểu Quốc hội VN thông qua điều luật 19 là như Đại Biểu Nguyễn Thị Thủy (Bắc Kạn) nói “Hiến pháp 2013 đã quy định Bảo vệ Tổ quốc là nghĩa vụ thiêng liêng và quyền cao quý của công dân và phản bội Tổ quốc là tội nặng nhất'” và “Đối với những tội này, không thể lấy bất kỳ lý do nào, kể cả lý do về hoạt động nghề nghiệp để cho rằng phải bảo vệ.”
Trên trang Facebook cá nhân của mình Luật sư Lê Công Định tại Sài Gòn viết ngày “20/6/2017 sẽ đi vào lịch sử nghề luật sư Việt Nam như một ngày điếm nhục nhất”.
Còn tại Hà Nội Luật sư trần Vũ Hải cũng bày tỏ trên trang mạng cá nhân rằng ông “sẽ bắt đầu nghiên cứu để tìm giải pháp theo Hiến pháp và pháp luật nhằm bảo vệ đồng nghiệp khỏi tai tiếng “kẻ phản chủ, hai mang” lẫn bảo vệ chính sự an toàn của luật sư.”

Trả lời phỏng vấn của Mai Hoa, Luật sư Nguyễn Văn Thân tại Sydney nói tại Úc cũng có những tội phạm rất nghiệm trọng như tội khủng bố xâm hại đến tính mạng người dân và an ninh quốc gia.
Đối với những vụ án như vậy thì theo ông điều đầu tiên nhât của người luật sư là xem xét xem bản cáo trạng có đúng đắn hay không, có bằng chứng hay không và bằng chứng có đáng tin cậy hay không hay do ép cung, tra tấn, đe dọa mà có… vì trước khi tòa tuyên án thì không ai có thể kết luận ai là có tội dù đó là luật sư.
