Chẳng thể nào vứt đống gạo này nên người mẹ đem gạo ra phơi nắng để mọt chết, sau đó cô vo gạo, nấu cơm cho cả nhà.
Tiền bạc cũng là ngọn nguồn của cơn bực mình. Từ lúc phạm tội ma tuý cách đây 2 năm, mọi nhất cử nhất động của cô đều bị vòng định vị đeo chân giám sát. Ngọc không được phép đi làm, mọi chi tiêu trong gia đình đều phụ thuộc vào thu nhập ít ỏi từ mức lương tối thiểu làm nhân viên thâu ngân cây xăng của Ben.
14 năm trước, Ngọc sang Mỹ định cư hợp pháp. Cô có thẻ xanh và dự tính sẽ theo đuổi đại học. Cô sống với bố, một người gốc Việt từng làm việc cho Mỹ trong suốt thời gian chiến tranh Việt Nam. Chính vì vậy mà họ bị chính quyền Việt cộng đối xử hà khắc. Sau 10 năm chờ đợi theo chương trình đoàn tụ thân nhân, hai cha con đã đến Mỹ.
Nhưng đó là năm 2003. Niềm lạc quan, háo hức của một cô bé tuổi mới lớn về ngôi nhà mới ở miền đất hứa mờ dần vào nỗi cô đơn, trầm cảm, bị bạo hành, ma tuý, tự vẫn, hành hung bằng vũ khí gây chết người, buôn bán ma tuý và tuyệt vọng. Ngọc không biết chính quyền Việt Nam trước đây từ chối nhận người đã bỏ nước ra đi nhưng vào năm 2008 đã thay đổi chính sách, đồng ý nhận công dân Việt Nam bị chính phủ Mỹ trục xuất. Chính vì vậy, thẩm phán toà di trú sẽ xác định tương lai của người mẹ trẻ sau khi cô thụ xong án ma tuý vào năm 2019.
Ngọc đã bị tống giấy trục xuất vào năm 2009 khi cô nhận tội hành hung bằng vũ khí gây chết người (mặc dù cô nói chưa bao giờ đụng tới vũ khí trong vụ này.) Cô lãnh án 3 năm rưỡi tù. Tuy nhiên, việc này xảy ra vào lúc ông Barack Obama làm Tổng thống. Do phạm trọng tội, Ngọc mất quyền thẻ xanh và Cơ quan Thực thi Di trú và Quan thuế (ICE) “treo” trường hợp của cô. Và một luật sư di trú ở quận Cam cũng đồng ý với cô. “Không nghi ngờ gì, cô ta sẽ bị trục xuất,” luật sư Từ Huy Hoàng – Tổng Giám đốc Tổ hợp luật sư Từ Huy Hoàng có trụ sở ở Fountain Valley – cho biết. “Không có sự công bằng ở đây. Buồn nhưng những chuyện như vậy xảy ra. Thẩm phán ra phán quyết dựa trên luật định,” ông Hoàng nói.
Một luật sư di trú khác cho rằng, thẩm phán sẽ xem xét đưa tương lai của Ngọc về Việt Nam. “ Tôi hy vọng cô ấy sẽ hội đủ điều kiện nhận một số cứu trợ nhân đạo nào đó để có thể mướn một luật sư kinh nghiệm đại diện.” luật sư Kim Lưu-Ng từ Tổ hợp luật sư KLN cho hay, “Người nhập cư phạm tội phải chịu trách nhiệm cho hành động của họ, nhưng không ai đáng bị trục xuất về nơi mà họ có thể bị bạo hành hay bị làm hại.”
