***************
Mr. Nguyen Van Su, born in 1956 married Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thuy, born in 1961, they have 4 children together
In 2014, with 6, they were forced off nearly 6 poles of agricultural land (more than 2,000 square metre), compensation cost is 201,000 VND/ 1 metre (about 9.45 USD)
When I asked: “Why didn’t you receive compensation amount like many other people but chose to sue the government?”. He answered “I am a farmer, how can I ensure our future life at such a small compensation amount, we have to raise our children, pay school fee, convert the job”
Their land (in nice area) was revoked, is now replaced by a four-storey house (built on the area of 60 metres), which costs 10,000,000,000 VND (470,300 USD). Such a good deal!
Now Mr. Su has two jobs, farming on planned land but left uncultivated by the government and sueing every week.
Being asked about happiness and sadness, he said: “Farming always makes me happy, but worried, anxious because that land is not ours any more, we will lose our crops at any time if they revoke it. Sueing makes me very sad, tired, they reject our application, we still have to tramp the streets till the ending days of the year”.
“However, we have gained many good things. Seeing us calling for help in vain, many kind hearted people in and outside Vietnam have helped us much. Our village is a typical one in all over the country in the arduous fight for justice. Other victims of unjust land reforms come to share with us. We are not afraid when we unite and we are right. It is very difficult to unite because government is very good at buying over and dividing us”
“Are you afraid of prison?” He burst out laughing “I was once very frightened, but not now, because I am right”
“When I had my land, I often woke up at 1.00, pulled up vegetables for selling till 3.30. After a short snap, I weeded then carried 20 buckets of water nearby for irrigation. I was very healthy then”
“In fact, I would be rich if I can keep my land. I can grow safe vegetables in greenhouse, breed cattles. I worked as a farmer, my wife sold our products at the market. We were very happy and healthy then. We have many experiences, do not have any difficulties in farming. For other jobs, I can just get wage in the end of each month. If I farm, I can get money every day, I am very happy”
“When we still had our land, we met and talked to each other each morning when we worked together in the field. But now, each one has their own work, some people go away for months, we do not meet each other any more”
“I am very proud of our villagers, because they are brave and dare to oppose injustice and violence. Duong Noi village will fight for their land”
